It turns out that nitric oxide – the gas in the air that we breathe – is also an important neurotransmitter in the brain. Strikingly, it’s only nitric oxide & the endocannabinoids that have been shown to cause “retrograde synaptic signaling” – where a neurotransmitter goes backwards against the usual flow of brain information & tells the neuron upstream to calm down, to lessen its firing. This negative feedback loop is an important system for keeping the brain from spinning out of control & keeping it protected.
